And then there were two … The Olympian Eagles, top-seeded in Division III, and the Eastlake Titans, seeded second in Division I, both won quarterfinal-round playoff games last Friday to advance to this Friday’s division semifinals as the San Diego Section post-season tournament winds to a close with championship games Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 at Escondido High School.
Olympian (11-0) defeated the visiting Mt. Carmel Sundevils, 40-7, while Eastlake (8-3) topped upset-minded Torrey Pines, 28-10, to both advance.
The Eagles will host the fourth-seeded Lincoln Hornets (8-3) while the Titans will host the third-seeded Grossmont Foothillers (9-2). Both games are set for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
Mar Vista almost made it three South County teams in this Friday’s semifinals after the Mariners, nursing a 21-20 fourth quarter lead, fumbled away a potential insurance touchdown in the end zone. Host Valley Center capitalized on the turnover to march down field and boot a game-winning field goal with less than two minutes remaining in the game to pull out a dramatic 23-21 victory.
Hilltop, meanwhile, ended its season 6-6 following a 50-0 loss to top-seeded Oceanside in a Division II quarterfinal game last Friday.
The Metro Conference will be sending a team entry to Saturday’s state championship meet after the Castle Park Trojans recorded a second place finish in the Division III boys race. The Trojans, however, could have had more.
Five individuals from the conference also qualified to compete at the state finals.
