The Broadway favorite of 1979, winning the Tony Award, Drama Desk Award and New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play, “The Elephant Man” is a poignant and thoughtful journey to the core of human dignity. It opens Friday, Jan. 13, at OnStage Playhouse, downtown Chula Vista’s intimate community theater, and runs through Feb. 4.

Steve Murdock returns to OnStage Playhouse to direct this ambitious production after directing “After-Play” as part of the 2008-09 season. Murdock will also act as sound designer.

Jennifer McKenna serves as producer, Matt Warburton as assistant director, Patty Fay as choreographer, Jane Russell as costumer and Chad Oakley as set and light design.

Leading the cast as John Merrick and Dr. Frederick Treves are James E. Steinberg and O.P. Hadlock, respectively.

Steinberg received the Best Actor Aubrey Award last season for his role as Barney Chasman in “Last of the Red Hot Lovers.” Hadlock recently appeared at OnStage as Mr. Bennet in Jon Jory’s adaptation of “Pride & Prejudice.”

The OnStage cast also features Joel Castellaw, Bob Christiansen, Aleksander D’Avignon, Brian P. Evans, Eric Hedberg, Cheryl Livingston, Keith Macario, Alexander Mayes, Jasmin Mellado, Nicol Reeves, Holly Stephenson and Samantha Vesco.

“The Elephant Man” is the profound and touching true story of John Merrick, a man hideously deformed since birth. Under the care of a brilliant and ambitious young doctor, Merrick transforms from a sensational object of pity to a sensitive and intelligent man.

Those around Merrick come to know his beautiful spirit within, and in the process, discover their own hidden flaws. “The Elephant Man” questions ideas of perception and what it means to be truly beautiful.

Due to content and issues discussed in the play, OnStage Playhouse recommends this show to ages 13 years and older. “The Elephant Man” is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.

Performance dates are Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m.
and Sunday at 2 p.m. Pay-what-you-can night is Thursday, Jan. 19.

General admission is $16, $14 for seniors, students and military. Group rates available for 10 or more. Call 422-7787 for ticket reservations or more information.
