Sweetwater pulls rug out from underneath undefeated Lancers

The Sweetwater High School football team, beleaguered by a four-game losing streak, celebrated the opening of its new Turf Field stadium Friday night -- and also celebrated a victory against the previously undefeated Hilltop Lancers. The Red Devils' inspired 17-9 non-league win was the first on the newly-carpeted field that had been dedicated just hours beforehand.

Sweetwater district and city of National City officials participated in pre-game ceremonies to dedicate the $3 million field. Former SuHi great Dan Saleaumua and district board president Jim Cartmill cut the ceremonial ribbon.

Hilltop led 9-3 until the Devils posted two second-half touchdowns on the scoreboard. The first was set up by a Lancer fumble on their own four-yard line. Angel Reyes later broke off a 62-yard scoring run to seal the upset victory.

Hilltop drops to 5-1 on the season; Sweetwater improves to 2-4.

"We've been getting better each week but it hasn't shown because we've been playing some tough teams. Eastlake, for instance, which we lost to last week, is one of the top teams in the state," SuHi coach Brian Hay said.
