A May 30 preliminary hearing has been set for a Chula Vista man who is charged with fatally stabbing his brother in the Eastlake area with a samurai sword and a barbecue fork.
Alberto Gonzalez Figueroa, 35, has pleaded not guilty to murder in the April 2 death of his brother, Mario Gonzalez Figueroa, 24, with whom he lived in the 2000 block of Lakeridge Circle.
The fratricide was committed with a samurai sword and a barbecue fork, which were identified as the deadly weapons in the charges filed by the District Attorney’s office. Paramedics attempted life saving efforts, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Chula Vista Police officers were called to the condominium at 7:18 a.m. where both brothers lived with their mother and grandfather. Alberto Figueroa was seen leaving the area on a bicycle with blood on his clothing.
At 8:05 a.m., National City Police arrested Figueroa at Sweetwater Plaza. If Figueroa is convicted, he faces a maximum prison term of 29 years to life, according to DA spokesperson Tanya Sierra.
Figueroa remains in the South Bay Detention Facility without bail.
