The Sunset League consists of six of the smallest enrollment schools in the San Diego Section. For basketball, the league’s lineup includes Foothills Christian, San Diego Academy, Calvary Christian Academy, Ocean View Christian Academy, Kuyper Prep Academy and Lutheran.
Two of those schools are located in National City, another three in Chula Vista and one in La Mesa. While the league may remain modest, its impact on this year’s San Diego Section playoffs was huge as its boys and girls championship teams both advanced to the Division V title game.
While the top-seeded Ocean View Christian Academy Patriots came up short in the girls final (see accompanying story), the top-seeded Foothills Christian Knights defeated the second-seeded Rock Academy Warriors, 44-36, to secure the program’s fifth division title in six years.
It was somewhat unexpected. The Knights’ star player, senior guard Dalton Mosser, exited the line-up following a 68-41 victory at San Diego Academy on Feb. 9. He remained sidelined through the end of the season and sat on the bench, his arm in a brace, during last Saturday’s CIF title game.
Dalton was averaging 28 points per game. Amazingly, Foothills (20-11) won its final five games of the season, including four playoff contests.
And win No. 20 didn’t come easy. The teams were tied 10-10 after the first quarter before the Knights went on a 16-8 scoring spurt in the second quarter. The teams deadlocked at 18 points in the second half.
At one point, Foothills managed to weather a five-minute stretch without scoring a point. With their lead whittled down to three points, the Knights came up with a couple of timely baskets to stave off the upset-minded Warriors (18-10).
“We wanted this one so bad,” Knights senior Ricky Adams said.
Senior Andre Johnson and junior Nick Loudon led Foothills with 15 points while sophomore Caleb Hoffman added eight points. Hoffman led the Knights with 13 rebounds.
The top four Sunset League finishers advanced to playoff competition, with seventh-seeded Calvary Christian-Chula Vista (57-53 over Pacific Ridge) and sixth-seeded SDA (59-47 over Calvary Christian-Vista) both recording opening round victories.
SDA finished league play 8-2, 17-6 overall, while Calvary Christian finished 6-4 in league play, 18-7 overall.
