The Chula Vista Spartans retained the right to keep the Legacy of Pride trophy on campus for another year after they defeated the longtime rival Sweetwater Red Devils, 27-0, Friday in the schools' heralded annual rivalry game.
The rivalry match-up between the two schools is the strongest in the South Bay; it is also the longest continuous rivalry game played in San Diego County.
Friday's game was the 67th played in the long-running series and marked the eighth consecutive win in the series for Chula Vista.
Sweetwater continues to lead the overall series, however.
"All week we talked about eliminating mistakes -- it was a great win but we can't be satisfied with this," Spartan coach Judd Rachow told his team after the game.
After Rachow departed the team huddle, CV players raised the massive trophy above their heads for renewed cheers from the crowd.
Jayvon Reed scored the game's opening two touchdowns -- the first on a three-yard leap over top into the end zone and the second on a 34-yard breakaway run down the Sweetwater sideline just seconds before halftime.
The hosts stiffened even more defensively in the second half to post the shutout victory.
The third quarter was scoreless but the Spartans tacked on two more touchdowns in the final minutes of the game. After a long run by Jaylon Candler positioned the ball in the shadow of the Red Devil goal posts, CV quarterback Hunter Gotto faked a handoff to Candler before hitting Daniel Bender for a nine-yard TD strike.
Ty Montiero later returned a punt 45 yards for the game's final score.
Both teams are now 1-1 on the season.
"It was a good win but we can't dwell on it," Reed said.
