When the Southwestern College football team returns to action for its next American Mountain Conference game Oct. 13 against San Diego Mesa at Olympian High School, the Jaguars will be sporting an unbeaten 2-0 conference record.
SWC improved to 4-1 overall after last Saturday’s 35-26 victory at East Los Angeles. The Jags rallied from an early 6-0 deficit with 28 unanswered points to effectively muzzle the Huskies.
Southwestern rolled up 493 yards in total offense, including 361 passing yards.
Brett Nelson (St. Francis) completed 22 of 38 attempts for 337 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for a score.
Nelson connected on two scoring plays that went for 11 and 37 yards with Bryant Mitchell (five catches, 78 yards). Nelson also tossed a 58-yard scoring pass to Vernon Johnson (six catches, 170 yards).
Johnson (Brewer/Ft. Worth) matched Bryant (Mt. Miguel) with two TDs by also hauling in a 24-yard strike from Jordan Jacobs (Coronado).
Nelson scored on a one-yard run in the fourth quarter to put the visitors ahead 35-18.
Patrick Mitchell (Morse) led SWC with 51 rushing yards on 12 carries.
Jovan Gonzales (Olympian) was perfect on four PAT conversions while Chris Navarro (Eastlake) booted one extra point.
Cameron Lee (Helix) and Donte Haddock (Eastlake) each had one interception; the Southwestern defense also recorded three sacks (two by Phoenix’s Jalal Yousufzai).
East L.A.’s Aaron Cantu entered the game as the conference’s top ranked quarterback with more than 350 yards per game but totaled just 103 yards and no touchdowns against the Jags.
Nelson is averaging 290 yards per game while Johnson tops the conference with 11 touchdowns.
