The Southwestern College men’s soccer team, fresh off a Pacific Coast Athletic Conference championship, will host conference rival San Diego City in a Southern California first-round regional playoff game Saturday, Nov. 17, at 2 p.m.
The Jaguars enter the match seeded sixth in the 14-team bracket with a 14-1-6 overall mark after finishing PCAC play 9-0-3.
City is 9-4-7 overall.
SWC coach Cem Tont is optimistic about this team’s chances after the Jaguars led the state with 76 goals scored this season.
Oscar Gonzalez, a sophomore midfielder from Otay Ranch High School, earned honors as a recent PCAC Athlete of the Week after scoring three goals and an assist in a 9-0 victory against visiting San Diego Mesa on Oct. 30.
Three Southwestern players entered the Jaguars’ final regular season game ranked among the state’s top 10 point leaders. Marcos Carrillo-Leon (Mar Vista) was third with 38 points, followed by Joey Estrada (Montgomery) with 34 points in sixth place and Gonzalez with 33 points seventh.
SWC freshman goalkeeper Sergio Duck (Coronado) was named the PCAC Athlete of the Week the week prior to Gonzalez. Duck entered the final week of regular season play with the second-lowest goals-against average in Southern California and ninth-best in the state at 0.79 after allowing 10 goals in 1,145 minutes.
He’s a major reason Southwestern has enjoyed so much success this season. He didn’t play in the Jaguars’ only loss of the year against Los Angeles Harbor back on Aug. 31.
City ’keeper Oscar Vazquez (Patrick Henry) shared PCAC Athlete of the Week honors with Duck after allowing only 19 goals in 1,100 minutes for a goals-against average of 1.55.
Saturday’s winner advances to play either third-seeded Mt. San Antonio College (16-3-1) or 14th-seeded San Bernardino Valley (8-8-5) on Tuesday, Nov. 20. Semifinal rounds are scheduled Nov. 24.
The state championship tournament is Nov. 30 to Dec. 2 at Mt. SAC.
