The Southwestern Jaguars men’s basketball team salvaged third place in the Southwestern-Cuyacama Holiday Tournament with a 68-64 win over Barstow last Saturday.
Coach John Cosentino’s charges trailed 32-31 at halftime, but stepped up their efforts to get the win, bringing their record to 5-7.
Dominique Miller led the Jags with 17 points, followed by Lamar Weston (16) and Jay Stone (13). Shey Mataele led the Barstow Vikings (1-7) with 20 points.
Taft pounds Southwestern ladies 68-61
“Pounding” isn’t a very nice term to apply to women’s basketball, but that was the case last Saturday when the Taft Cougars overpowered the Lady Jaguars.
Taft suited up only seven players. Among the seven were two large low posters, Bezat Anbesse (24 points) and Crystallyn Faletoi (25 points), who consistently backed into Southwestern defenders, scattering them like bowling pins en route to easy layups.
Coach Darnell Cherry’s team trailed 28-26 at halftime, but allowed the margin to grow. Chloe Cook had 16 points and Alexis Harris added 13 points for Southwestern, which saw its record fall to 4-6.
