When Thomas Wolfe wrote “You Can’t Go Home Again” in 1940 he could have been writing about San Diego City College women’s basketball coach Andrea Aguilar. The former Eastlake High School and Southwestern College star Aguilar now coaches the City College Lady Knights who lost convincingly to the Lady Jaguars, 65-39, on Wednesday.
Southwestern’s most athletic player, Kayla Payne, started off the evening with an impressive singing of the National Anthem for Southwestern’s last regular season home game. If the Jaguars make the playoffs, and it is likely they will, they might have playoff games at Southwestern.
City College’s record is now 10-15. The team, comprised solely of freshmen, led briefly at the start before Southwestern took a 38-15 lead at the half.
Southwestern coach Darnell Cherry’s 14-12 team came out after intermission with a vengeance, leading City by 33 points, 60-27, with six minutes left in the game.
Chelsea Ball led Southwestern with 16 points, with 14 coming in the first half, while Payne added 12. Shamonique Malone-Boyd led City with 14.
