Southwestern College will hold its eighth annual Athletic Hall of Fame banquet on April 27 at the San Diego Country Club, 88 West L St., Chula Vista. A social hour will start the festive evening off at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 and the awards program at 7:15. Cost is $20 per person. Space is limited to 200 seats. Semi-formal attire is requested (no jeans). Call 482-6370 for information.
Among those being inducted include cross country runner Sarah (Apgar) Sigala, golfer Howard Knodt, tennis player Viridiana Martino, cheer squad advisor Patti Moore and cross country/track and field runner Allen Hazard.
•Apgar was the first female runner at SWC to win an individual California Community College cross country championship when she accomplished that feat in 2006. She helped lead the Jaguars to the state team title in both 2005 and 2006.
•Knodt was named the Mission Conference Golfer of the Year in both 1977 and 1978. He continues to play golf and was named the SCGA Senior Golfer of the Year in both 2009 and 2010.
•Martino, who graduated in 2007 with a 4.0 grade-point average and was accorded honors as the Pacific Coast Conference Female Scholar of the Year, was an All-PCC doubles team selection and a Southern California regional qualifier.
•Moore has helped the school’s cheer squad attain levels never before achieved. Since 2005, SWC has won 10 first-place awards and seven second-place awards in competitions, qualifying the Jags cheerleaders to participate in the NCAA Collegiate Cheer Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla.
•Hazard, who competed from 1971-73, set eight school records by the time he graduated, including the fastest mile in school history. Today, he is exercise science and health education adjunct professor at the college.
