South County water polo clubs making a splash this summer

The summer high school water polo club season is making a splash for local athletes and teams.

There doesn’t appear to be a shortage of places to play if you want to get in a little bit of summer fun mixed in with some pre-season training.

The Mustang South Coast Water Polo Club is fielding a boys 16-under and a girls 18-under team this summer. Other programs exist at Mater Dei Catholic High School, Southwestern College (through Bonita Vista High School) and the Parkway pool (San Diego Suns).

Club Crusader Water Polo is off to a 2-0 start in boys 16-under action following victories against teams from Santana and El Capitan high schools.

The Mustangs are 1-1 following a 5-3 win over the Norsemen and a 9-4 loss to Team 94.

In girls 18-under play, the Mustangs are 1-1 following an 8-4 victory against the Wolfpack and a 9-5 loss to Rancho San Diego.

Bonita is also participating in the girls 18-under summer club league, which holds its games at Valhalla High School.

Games in the 16-under boys league are played at El Capitan High School.

The Suns, who are coached by Hilltop High alumnus Matt Chism, are fielding both a boys and girls program for middle school and high school players. Cost is $200-250 for the six-week program that ends July 26. Players are drawn from Chula Viata, Hilltop and Mar Vista high schools.

"We go three pracrtices each week and focus on fundamental skills and back-to-basics," Chism said. "It's a starter program right now. As it builds, we'll offer more games."

The Mustang South Coast Water Polo Club will hold open tryouts on Saturday, July 6, from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Mt Miguel High School pool. Boys and girls ages 12 and older with good swimming skills and safe in deep water are welcome to try out. Contact coach Ernie Medina at orhcoachernie@sbcglobal.net.

The Mustang South Coast club will scrimmage the Spartan club team on Monday, July 8, at 11 a.m. at the Parkway pool.
