Metro Conference league play is looming on the horizon for South County’s collection of girls volleyball, girls field hockey and boys water polo teams.
Here’s a snapshot of the three sports through the opening month of non-league play:
The Bonita Vista Barons and Otay Ranch Mustangs own the best win-loss records among Metro Conference teams thus far in 2013.
The defending Mesa League champion Barons improved to 13-4 in non-league play after defeating La Jolla Country Day, 3-0, on Sept. 24. Bonita Vista won by scores of 25-11, 25-21, 25-21.
The Mustangs (14-7) finished 4-1 at the Otay Ranch Invitational held Sept. 20-21 and 4-3 at last weekend’s La Jolla Beach Cities Invitational.
Allie Loitz leads Bonita Vista on the season with 136 kills, 21 aces and 25 blocks, while Megan Riley tops the team with 123 digs and Taimane Napoleon has compiled a team high 226 assists.
Grecia Cordero and Shayne Mojica lead the Mustangs with 161 and 140 kills. Cordero, a freshman, also leads the team with 163 digs. Dominique Conrady tops the Mustangs with 195 assists.
GIRLS FIELD HOCKEY
Hilltop is 6-4-1 following a 1-1 draw against La Jolla on Sept. 21 as part of the Serra tournament. Previously, the Vikings had edged the Lancers, 3-2, on Sept. 9.
Hilltop owns victories this season against Mission Bay (4-0 on Sept. 5), Helix (2-1 on Sept. 11), Mt. Carmel (3-1 on Sept. 18), Bishop (2-1 on Sept. 19) and El Capitan (4-0 on Sept. 20). The Lancers finished 1-1-1 at the Serra tournament, defeating Poway by a score of 2-1 and then dropping a 4-0 decision to Fallbrook, also on Sept. 21. The loss to Fallbrook was the second on the season. The Warriors shut out Hilltop, 5-0, in the season’s opening game on Sept. 4.
The Lancers return to non-league play Oct. 8 with a game at Cathedral Catholic. Face off is 6:30 p.m. Hilltop opens Metro Conference league play Oct. 11 at Bonita Vista following a non-league game the previous day against visiting Point Loma. Both games are scheduled for 3 p.m. starts.
Meanwhile, Eastlake recorded its second consecutive victory of the season after defeating host Granite Hills, 6-0, on Sept. 25. Gillian Stargensky led the Titans (2-3) with three goals and two assists as the team’s player of the game.
Otay Ranch is 4-5-1 while Bonita Vista is 3-4-1 and Chula Vista is 1-6 in non-league action to start the season.
BOYS WATER POLO
Defending South Bay League champion Mar Vista (7-2) won its seventh consecutive game after defeating Castle Park, 16-2, on Sept. 19. Josh Johnson leads the Mariners with 17 goals and 14 assists in eight games.
Shane Landry ranks second in teams scoring with 13 goals and 12 assists, followed by Duncan Hastings with 12 goals and 13 assists and Zach Mahan with 10 goals and six assists. In seven games in the cage, Faux Mahan had allowed 31 goals while stopping 39 shots.
Mar Vista opened the season with losses to Rancho Buena Vista (9-4 on Sept. 5) and Fallbrook (6-4 on Sept. 5) before topping Steele Canyon (13-5 on Sept. 6). The Mariners have also defeated Mission Hills (13-4 on Sept. 7), Rancho Bernardo (10-7 on Sept. 7) and Clairemont (11-9 on Sept. 12) in non-league play.
Mar Vista is undefeated against South Bay League rivals so far, with two wins against Castle Park (7-2 on Sept. 10 and 16-2 on Sept. 19) and Olympian (16-3 on Sept. 17).
The Mariners resume South Bay League play Tuesday against the Chula Vista Spartans at 3 p.m. at the Parkway pool.
