Isaiah Dawson and Elijah Shelton, both members of the South Bay Outlaws youth lacrosse program, have been selected to the roster for the U.S. Lacrosse San Diego regional U13 all-star team. Dawson is a sixth grader while Shelton is a seventh grader.
The boys were among 80 players who attended try-outs; 22 players were selected following evaluations by coaches. The selected players represent all areas of the region, including Chula Vista, Scripps Ranch, Poway, La Jolla, Rancho Peñasquitos, Escondido, Carmel Valley, Rancho Santa Fe, Carlsbad and Del Mar.
The team will travel to Arlington, Texas, in early June to play in the 2012 U.S. Lacrosse Regional Championships against similar teams from across the country. The age-group tournaments represent U.S. Lacrosse’s 15th annual series of youth events.
Tom Duerr, the head coach for the La Jolla Youth Lacrosse Club, will serve as the San Diego regional team’s head coach. Neil Scott, a Philadelphia native, will serve as the team’s assistant coach.
Both Dawson and Shelton participated in a special halftime scrimmage involving the Outlaws to highlight the inaugural South Bay Family Lacrosse Night April 19 at Otay Ranch High School.
Outlaws coach Keith Quigley said the two players, both in their second year with the Outlaws program, are deserving of representing the region on the all-star team.
“Isaiah is one of the best sixth-grade lacrosse players in the area,” Quigley said. “Each season he leads in goals and assists. But even better than that is his display of teamwork, leadership, hard work and hustle. He has a very bright future on the lacrosse field.
“In such a short period of time, Eli has really caught on to the game of lacrosse,” Quigley continued. “Eli is a real team player with a very well-rounded game. He makes quick decisions on the field and makes the players around him better. He, too, has a bright future in the world of lacrosse.”
The Outlaws had the opportunity to showcase their fifth/sixth grade and middle school teams in games May 9 and May 16 at Voyager Park.
The Outlaws’ fifth/sixth grade team remains undefeated on the season at 8-0 and will participate in a playoff game Saturday, May 19, at Coronado High School at 1 p.m.
