See the night lights

The city of Chula Vista may have done away with its Independence Day fireworks display near the bay, but in east Chula Vista the sky will light up over the Olympic Training Center.

The Eastlake Educational Foundation is hosting a VIP reception and party for 200 guests who will enjoy food, drinks, children’s activities and a fireworks show at 9 p.m.

The cost is $30 for adults and $12 for children age 12 and under. Proceeds benefit local schools.

Advance registration is required. Ticket sales will not be available on the day of the event.

The event is from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Olympic Training Center. For more information log onto eefkids.org.

If you’re not in Chula Vista but you still want to catch a light show, you’ll be in luck. There are plenty of places to see fireworks, including National City.

Beginning today the city of National City and the National City Host Lion’s Club will host their annual Fourth of July carnival through July 4.

The event will take place at Kimball Park, 12th Street and D Avenue, and will feature games, rides, food and drinks sold by local non-profit organizations.

Featured events include a Miss National City scholarship pageant that will take place on Saturday evening at 7 p.m.

During this pageant, young women from the community will compete to represent National City in various civic events and be eligible for a scholarship at the end of her reign.

There will also be a fireworks display on July 4 at 9  p.m. These events are free to all spectators.

This year’s carnival will also feature pay-one-price ride days on Friday, Monday and Tuesday from 5 to 10 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m. Each pay-one-price wristband is $20.
