Roadrunners go beep beep past Jaguars, 45-14, to claim conference opener

The Southwestern College Jaguars appear to have their work cut out for them after falling, 45-14, in their Central Conference/East Division football opener at College of the Desert on Oct. 8. The loss snapped the Jags’ four-game winning streak.

Southwestern (4-2 overall, 0-1 in conference play) led 14-10 after the first quarter on the strength of a 41-yard scoring run by Beau Bickel (Galena) and a one-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brett Nelson (St. Francis) to Berkley Lutu (Somoana).

The Roadrunners had opened an early 10-0 lead on a 49-yard touchdown run by Jai Steib and a 27-yard field goal by Brett Symonds.

COD would score the game’s final 35 points to rout the visitors in a game played under hot weather conditions. The temperature at the 6 p.m. kickoff was 98 degrees.

The Roadrunners piled up 21 points in the second quarter to lead 31-14 at halftime.

Jai scored a total of three touchdowns in the game while COD signal-caller Charles Fortis threw for one score and rushed for another. Tyewan Johnson also scored on a touchdown run to round out the victor’s scoring column.
