The city of Chula Vista’s districting commission was theoretically formed Wednesday after the remaining three candidates were selected to round out the seven-member panel.
Jerome Torres, Cheryl Goddard and Patricia Chavez were selected to serve on the voting district commission, pending approval by the City Council at its Aug. 12 meeting.
Torres is the only commissioner to live in west Chula Vista. He was selected mainly because of his previous redistricting experience.
“It would be kind of nice to have somebody with us who’s been through this before and can maybe give us some guidance,” said John Korey, a commission member who was appointed last week by the City Council.
Torres helped in the redistricting process at the Long Beach Community College District.
He was selected to serve on the Chula Vista commission mainly because of his experience.
Goddard, 36, a Rancho Del Rey resident, works for the city of San Diego as a land use and environmental planner.
Chavez, a former appointed Chula Vistacouncilwoman, said she applied to be a commissioner because she wants to be the voice for underrepresented communities.
“I know what it feels like when a neighborhood is forgotten,” she said. “I didn’t grow up in Chula Vista but I grew up in a community very much like our southwest corridor.”
Chavez lives in Rancho Del Rey but said she does a lot of work in west Chula Vista.
The first four commissioners — Rita Buencamino-Andrews, John Korey, Rey Monzon and William Richter — were picked last week by the charter review commission.
