Red Devils’ OT win over Trojans tightens up South Bay League roller hockey standings

Just when one thinks everything is in focus, someone has to throw a monkey wrench into the gears. The monkey wrench – or rather, the latest one – occurred Friday night (Feb. 3) at the Castle Park High School roller rink when the Sweetwater Red Devils shocked the South Bay League-leading Castle Park Trojans with a 7-6 overtime win.

The Trojans are still in first place in the league standings but now share the top-running position with two other teams. Castle Park, Chula Vista and Sweetwater each now have two league losses.

SuHi head coach Brandon Fox called it a “great game” by his team. And it was a great game played between two evenly matched teams.

When CP’s Martin Mari gave his team a 1-0 lead just 12 seconds into the game, it appeared as if the Trojans might roll over the Red Devils. But, in the span of a couple eye blinks, Sweetwater had taken a 2-1 lead and Castle Park was forced to play catch-up the remainder of the contest.

Phillip Brandon scored both SuHi goals, the latter assisted by Marco Salazar, to give the National City team a one-goal lead after the opening period.

The Red Devils added another goal early in the second period to go up 3-1. Brandon got the goal while Salazar got the assist.

Castle Park’s Adolfo Medina made it a 3-2 game, assisted by team scoring leader Eleazar Cruz, but Brandon’s fourth goal of the game (this time unassisted) pushed Sweetwater out to a 4-2 lead to close the middle stanza.

From there, an already exciting game turned into a madhouse as the teams combined for six goals – four by the Trojans and two by the Devils – to finish regulation play knotted in a 6-6 tie.

Cruz narrowed the score to 4-3 on a goal assisted by Jared Fuentes. The same combination made it 4-4 with 10:42 to play in the period.

Salazar scored on a breakaway with 6:30 left to give the Devils a 5-4 lead on the scoreboard.

Armando Rivera then knocked in a loose puck at the side of the CP net to extended the SuHi lead to 6-4.

But the Trojans, who faced adversity all game long, did not give up.

Medina scored his second goal of the game with 4:10 to play to make the score 6-5 and momentum shifted back to Castle Park.

Mari then scored his second goal of the game with 1:18 left in the period to tie the game 6-6. Medina drew the assist on Mari’s game-tying goal.

At this point, any shot could stand up as the potential game-winner and Sweetwater’s Salazar dinged the post with 40 seconds to play. The puck bounced out and the game continued.

The teams proceeded into a five-minute three-on-three sudden-victory overtime period. Both teams had great chances to end the game with a win, though the Trojans had to fight the hardest after taking a two-minute penalty for interference that gave the Devils a three-on-two advantage.

The two CP players on the court – Cruz and Mari – performed admirably in breaking up Sweetwater scoring chances and then skating the puck out of danger to create offensive chances of their own at the other end.

Castle Park finally weathered the penalty with 1:30 left in the thrill-a-second OT period. But the Trojans couldn’t quiet the storm.

Salazar picked up a loose puck just inside the red line and skated in alone on CP goalie Ariel Briones, scoring low to end the game with a win for Sweetwater with 55 seconds left in the extra period.

“The game got real tense about halfway through,” Salazar offered. “I got worked up and had to calm myself down.

“(On the game-winner) I just skated in and shot low. I was thinking about going top shelf but (after hitting the post) I thought I better not try that again. I went low and it worked out.”

Sweetwater improved to 6-2 in league play, 9-6 overall

Castle Park dropped to 6-2 in league play, 10-6 overall.

Defending league champion Chula Vista is 7-2 in league play, 10-6 overall.

Chula Vista moves into first place on points-percentage, though all three teams have two losses.

In another game played Friday at the Castle Park roller rink, Hilltop continued a recent surge by topping Bonita Vista, 7-1, in a Mesa League game.

Trevor Fune lit the lamp with three goals and one assist for the victorious Lancers (3-2 in league, 7-6 overall) while teammate Danny Godinez scored two goals. Kristen Lambertson and Eddie Arguello each scored single goals for Hilltop. Argeullo also registered an assist in the game.

Matt Custodio, assisted by Nick Stark, picked up the lone goal for the Barons (0-5 in league, 5-8 overall).

Eastlake won by forfeit over Otay Ranch to improve to 5-0 in Mesa League play, 12-2 overall. Otay Ranch, which lost 8-5 to Hilltop on Thursday, saw its record dip to 2-3 in league play, 8-5-1 overall.

Thursday’s match-up between the Lancers and Mustangs was an exceedingly tight affair with Hilltop holding a 5-4 lead midway through the game. The Lancers got some breathing room at 6-4 and then 7-4. But Otay Ranch bounced back with a power play goal to trim the Hilltop lead to 7-5.

The Lancers scored a late insurance goal to win by three goals.

Hilltop received goals from four players in its biggest win of the year. Arguello netted a hat trick while Godinez scored twice. Lambertson and Caleb Macias each scored single goals in support of goaltender Skyler Garces, who was pressed into emergency duty due to an injury suffered by starter Victor Guzman in Wednesday’s non-league game against Scripps Ranch.

“It was definitely a great effort and a great win by our team,” HHS head coach George Godinez explained. “We played well defensively and capitalized on their offensive chances,”

David Mendez led the Mustangs with a goal and two assists.

The Lancers will conclude a busy week with their fifth game in six days Saturday against Chula Vista. Hilltop opened the week with a 7-0 non-league win over Southwest on Monday. The Lancers dropped a 13-1 non-league decision to Scripps Ranch on Wednesday, then followed that with victories against Otay Ranch and Bonita Vista.

In other games on Thursday, Eastlake rolled past Bonita Vista, 14-2, in a Mesa League game while Chula Vista shut out Southwest, 7-0, in a South Bay League game.

Freshman Braden Mayer led the Titans with nine points on five goals and four assists. Will Hamilton (three goals, one assist) and Sean Layton (one goal, three assists) each netted four points while Seiya Higiya recorded a hat trick. Jose Campos and Luke Killeen each scored one goal.

Hector Garcia tallied six goals and one assist to have a hand in all seven Spartan goals in the win over the Raiders, whose strong defensive held Chula Vista off the scoreboard until 2:46 remained in the first period.

Devils make Spartans see red

After rain washed out games Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 6-7, teams returned to the Castle Park High School roller hockey rink on Wednesday, Feb. 8, to resume competition.

The big game on the night was the Sweetwater-Chula Vista South Bay League match-up as both teams were in hot pursuit of this year’s league championship banner.

The Red Devils controlled the action for most of the game, with CV goaltender Gio Cimmino’s heroics keeping the Spartans within striking distance until the final seconds.

Cimmino was credited with 45 saves as Sweetwater snipers continually attacked the net throughout the game.

The Red Devils went up first on the scoreboard as Crisel Magyawi scored off a pass from teammate Jesus Meza to stake the National City team to a 1-0 lead.

But Chula Vista’s Mr. Reliable, Hector Garcia, promptly evened the score off a pass from teammate Allison Smith.

Garcia punished Sweetwater on a turnover at the red line with a breakaway goal to push the Spartans in front 2-1.

But the Devils had an answer for that as their own Mr. Reliable, Phillip Brandon, scored an unassisted goal to tie the game.

The score was tied 2-2 at the end of two periods.

The third period was intense. Marco Salazar scored a shorthanded goal to give the Red Devils a 3-2 lead but Chula Vista was never out of reach with Garcia making repeated runs toward the net.

The Sweetwater defense was waiting and collapsed on the Spartan scoring ace to force Garcia to shoot wide. SuHi netminder Juan Meza turned in his game of the season to scoop up the rest of the shots.

The Red Devils sealed their victory on a goal by Brandon with just six-tenths of a second left on the score clock in one of the most meaningful and intense games played this season at the CPHS rink.

“It’s a matter of a playing your ‘all’ out there,” explained Brandon, the Devils’ ironman. “If you put your ‘all’ out there and can keep from getting distracted by things you cannot control, you can skate coast to coast all game.”

Sweetwater improved to 7-2 in league play, 10-6 overall, while Chula Vista dropped to 7-3 in league play, 11-7 overall.

Castle Park moved into a first place tie in the league standings with the Devils after skating past league rival Mar Vista, 10-0, also on Wednesday.

Eleazar Cruz led the Trojans (7-2 in league, 11-7 overall) with four goals and two assists while teammate Adolfo Medina collected three goals and one assist. Martin Mari contributed two goals while Jesus Gonzalez scored once.

Mar Vista dropped to 0-8 in league play, 1-15 overall.

In the evening’s lone non-league game, Hilltop sped past Southwest, 8-2, as Trevor Fune picked up two goals and three assists and Danny Godinez recorded a hat trick and tack on one assist to lead the Lancers (8-7 overall).

In terms of girl power displayed on the court, Southwest’s Kayleigh Andrew and Hilltop’s Kristen Lambertson each scored two goals for their respective teams.

Titans top Barons, 10-2, to clinch Mesa League title with two league games remaining

CASTLE PARK HIGH SCHOOL, Feb. 10 – The Eastlake Titans became the first Sweetwater district roller hockey team to officially clinch a league championship in the 2016-17 season after the Titans rolled past Mesa League rival Bonita Vista by a score of 10-2 Friday evening.

The win raised Eastlake’s record to 7-0 in league play, 14-2 overall. The Titans have a three-game lead on the second place Otay Ranch Mustangs (4-3 in league play, 10-5-1 overall) and a four-game lead on the third place Hilltop Lancers (3-4, 8-9) with two league games remaining on the regular season schedule.

Bonita Vista dropped to 0-7 in league play, 6-10 overall.

Freshman wunderkind Braden Mayer once again led the way on the scoresheet for Eastlake with five goals while teammate Jake Powell collected three goals and one assist. Sean Layton contributed two goals and one assist while Will Hamilton dished out two assists and Karla Navarrete chipped in with one assist.

Anna and Matt Custodio connected on both goals for the Barons, who trailed 8-0 through two periods.

Powell scored one shorthanded goal in the game for the Titans, who have gone unbeaten in their last six games.

In other games on Friday, Otay Ranch rolled past Hilltop, 15-4, to move past the Lancers into sole possession of second place in the league standings.

Sean Devaney led the Mustangs with seven goals and two assists while David Mendez racked up three goals and three assists in the blowout win. Otay Ranch also received three goals and one assist from Aaron Marientes and one goal and two assists from Paul Chavez.

Eddie Arguello led Hilltop with two goals and one assist while Danny Godinez contributed a goal and assist in the loss.

In the final game of the night, Mar Vista bounced back from an early 2-0 deficit to tip South Bay League rival Southwest, 4-3, in a shootout.

Jasmine Canonizado scored twice to pace Southwest to a 2-0 lead. Kayleigh Andrew assisted on the first goal; Mar Vista inadvertently scored into its own net, with Canonizado receiving credit for the goal as the closest Raider player to the net.

The gift goal looked like it might hold up as the game-winner until Southwest incurred a five-minute major for boarding with 13:17 remaining in the game. The Mariners had the opportunity to score as many goals as possible during the five-minute penalty but could only manage one off the stick of Tony Rodriguez, assisted by Brian Suarez.

Mar Vista kept up the momentum from there and sent the game into overtime on a goal by Adam Yoshingi, assisted by Rodriguez.

There was no scoring in the five-minute sudden-victory overtime period, with Southwest goaltender Mari Cornel sticking several shots aside and smothering rebounds.

The Mariners won the three-round shootout 2-1 on goals by Suarez and Rodriguez.

Both teams scored on their first attempts, then MV netminder Ben Brown stopped the final two Raider shot attempts.

Canonizado scored the lone shootout goal for Southwest.

With the win — the first in league play for the Mariners this season – Mar Vista (1-8 in league, 2-15 overall) moved ahead of the Raiders (1-9 in league, 1-17 overall) in the league standings.

Lancers shock Mustangs, 8-5, in Mesa League play; Eastlake rolls up 14-2 win

CASTLE PARK HIGH SCHOOL, Feb. 2, 2017 — Hilltop delivered the shocker of Thursday’s slate of Mesa League games by defeating Otay Ranch by a score of 8-5. Eddie Argruello came up big for the Lancers with three goals and one assist while Kristen Lambertson and Trevor Fune continued productive seasons with one goal and two assists each. Danny Godinez scored two goals for Hilltop.

David Mendez chalked up three points for Otay Ranch on a goal and two assists while teammate Aaron Marientes scored twice. Paul Chavez chipped in with a goal and assist for the Mustangs.

Meanwhiler, Eastlake remained undefeated in league play by rolling past Bonita Vista 14-2. Freshman Braden Mayer paced the Titans with nine points on five goals and four assists. Will Hamilton (three goals, one assist) and Sean laryton (one goal, three assists) each picked up four points while Seiya Hagiya contributed a hat trick.

In the night’s lone South Bay League game, Chula Vista shut out Southwest, 7-0, behind six goals and one assist from Hector Garcia.

Titans leave Mariners in the fog, win 15-0 shortened game

CASTLE PARK HIGH SCHOOL, Jan. 31, 2017 – The Eastlake Titans piled up 15 goals in two periods of play before dense fog and dampness caused the game to be called. Sean Layton, Will Hamilton and Jake Powell led Eastlake (10-2) with three goals and one assist each while Braden Mayer chipped in with three points on one goal and two assists.

Also for the Titans, Seiya Higuya scored two goals, Percilla Mayer scored one goal and Jonathon McCormick and Marco Macias each recorded one assist.

Mar Vista dropped to 1-13 on the season.

Trojans keep momentum flowing, leap over Spartans into first place in South Bay League standings

CASTLE PARK HIGH SCHOOL, Jan. 30, 2017 – Castle Park handed Chula Vista its second league loss, winning an 8-5 decision over the Spartans, to jump into first place in the South Bay League standings. Martin Mari led the Trojans with three goals and one assist while Adolfo Medina contributed two goals and two assists and Eleazar Cruz scored twice.

Hector Garcia, last year’s South Bay League Player of the Year, paced Chula Vista, last year’s league champion, with four goals while Allison Smith collected two assists. #0 also scored for the Spartans.

Castle Park led by scores of 4-1 and 6-2 before holding off a late Spartan charge. The Trojans improved to 6-1 in the league standings while Chula Vista dropped to 6-2.

In a pair of non-league games, Hilltop blanked Southwest by a score of 7-0 while North County League leader Rancho Bernardo toppled Otay Ranch 18-2.

Danny Godinez and Caleb Macias led Hilltop each with two goals and one assist while Trevor Fune contributed one goal and one assist.

Hilltop built a 3-0 first period lead.

David Mendez and Paul Chavez each scored goals for Otay Ranch (7-5-1).

Ike Frankel led Rancho Bernardo (14-1) with six points (three goals, three assists) while Bailey Ridout scored five goals. Bradley Larson collected five points on two goals and three assists. Miles Cook collected four points on two goals and two assists while Nik Thomas collected three goals and one assist.

Alex Pang scored two goals for the top-ranked Broncos.

Stark means ‘strong’ in German; Bonita Vista’s Nick Stark proves just that with OT winner

CASTLE PARK HIGH SCHOOL, Jan. 27, 2017 – Bonita Vista sophomore Nick Stark has started putting his name in the scorebook in increasing numbers as the 2016-17 season has progressed. He proved to be the catalyst of the Barons’ exciting 5-4 overtime win over Sweetwater on Friday by collecting four goals, including the game winner.

“I can’t think of another time I scored four goals in a game,” Stark offered after the game, excitement radiating from his body.

Bonita Vista, which defeated the Red Devils to place runner-up in the teams’ group at the recent Pam Wiser Classic tournament, erased two SuHi leads in the non-league match-up.

The Barons took an early 1-0 lead on a power play goal by Costas Dopulos. However, Sweetwater promptly tied the score, 1-1, as Armando Rivera cashed in on a pass from teammate Marco Salazar.

Stark scored his first goal of the game, assisted by Matt Custodio, to propel Bonita Vista back in front by a 2-1 score. But disaster struck the Barons when Salazar scored two shorthanded goals to flip the score momentarily to 3-2 in the Red Devils’ favor.

Bonita Vista did get one goal back near the end of the powerplay to tie the score 3-3. Stark got the equalizer, assisted once again by Custodio.

The Barons’ dynamic duo left their calling card again to put their team back in the lead at 4-3. But a shorthanded goal by SuHi”s Phillip Brandon deadlocked the game 4-4.

Stark had the last shot in regulation but it was saved by Devil netminder Juan Meza.

The teams skated into the three-on-three overtime and Stark scored the game-winner with 1:40 left in the five-minute sudden-victory period.

The win raised Bonita Vista’s record to 5-7 overall while Sweetwater saw its record dip to 7-6.

The overtime victory energized everyone on the Barons bench.

“This overtime win just raised everyone’s confidence level on the team,” veteran BVHS head coach Keith Quigley noted. “This was the type of game we wanted to play – to bring more confidence on the playing court, and it showed. We battled for the whole 45 minutes and more, as it turned out. It was exciting to win in overtime.”

In the evening’s preceding two games, Castle Park and Chula Vista each picked up victories in their assault on first place in the South Bay League standings. Castle Park defeated Southwest, 5-2, while Chula Vista stopped Mar Vista 9-3.

CV scoring machine Hector Garcia hammered out seven of his team’s nine goals while Bryan Suarez collected a hat trick for Mar Vista.

The Spartans improved to 6-1 in league play, 8-4-1 overall, with the win. The Mariners dropped to 0-6 in league play, 1-12 overall with the loss.

Eleazar Cruz and Jared Fuentes led Castle Park (5-1, 9-5) each with two goals while Adolfo Medina scored once and added an assist. Angel Bonilla and Jasmine Canonizado each scored single goals for Southwest (1-6, 1-12)

Titans deliver 13-4 shocker over Mustangs to take Mesa League lead

CASTLE PARK HIGH SCHOOL, Jan. 26, 2017 – The Eastlake Titans took control of first place in the Mesa League standings after shocking the arch rival Otay Ranch Mustangs 13-4. The teams had entered the game with identical 2-0 league records.

Braden Mayer (five goals, one assist) and Jake Powell (four goals, two assists) each keyed Eastlake with six points in the win while Will Hamilton chipped in with five points (four goals, one assist). Karla Navarrete contributed two assists while Jose Campos had one assist.

Aaron Marientes and David Mendez each led Otay Ranch with two goals and one assist.

The Titans improved to 3-0 in league play, 9-2 overall; the Mustangs sank to 2-1 in league play, 7-2-1 overall.

Hilltop edged Bonita Vista, 4-3, in a Mesa League match-up on Thursday. With the win the Lancers improved to 1-2 in league play, 3-5-1 overall. The Barons dropped to 0-3 in league play, 4-7 overall.

Danny Godinez paced Hilltop with two goals while Kristen Lambertson continued her hot tear of late by adding one goal. Caleb Macias also scored once for the Lancers while Eddie Arguello contributed one assist.

Nick Stark led Bonita Vista with two goals and one assist. Matt Custodio scored the other goal for the Barons.

Raiders nip Mariners, 4-3, to pick up first win of 2016-17

CASTLE PARK HIGH SCHOOL, Jan. 25, 2017 — The Southwest Raiders picked up their first win of the season by holding off South Bay League rival Mar Vista, 4-3, in a tight game. Angel Bonilla scored all four goals for Southwest (1-5, 1-11) . Isaac Suarez, Katie Griffin and Bryan Suarez each scored single goals for Mar Vista (0-5, 1-11)

In the other game played on Wednesday, Castle Park solidified its top tier standing in the South Bay League standings by topping league rival Sweetwater, 8-5, in a battle for second place. Eleazar Cruz led the victorious Trojans (4-1, 8-5) with four goals and one assist while Martin Mari racked up four goals.

Marco Salazar led Sweetwater (4-2, 7-5) with a hat trick while Adrian Kercher and Phillip Brandon each chipped in with one goal and one assist.
