Prison or probation for failed robber

A San Diego man pleaded guilty Monday to attempted robbery of a worker at a Taco Bell restaurant in Chula Vista.
Sentencing was set for Feb. 26 for Salvador Alberto Martinez, 36, by Chula Vista Superior Court Judge Garry Haehnle.

He could face several years in prison, but may be eligible for probation.

Charges of assault with a deadly weapon, burglary and another attempted robbery were dismissed after he pleaded guilty. Several witnesses testified Oct. 30 in the preliminary hearing regarding the July 23 incident at the restaurant at 696 E St.

He entered the store at 11:35 a.m. and yelled for patrons to get down on the floor. He was alleged to have held a knife to two employees when he demanded money from the safe, but left after the workers said they didn’t have access to the safe.

Martinez remains in the South Bay Detention Facility on $155,000 bail.
