The Otay Ranch Mustangs moved closer to securing a perfect season in Mesa League play by defeating the Hilltop Lancers, 16-3, in a game played Wednesday afternoon at the Loma Verde pool. The win boosted the Mustangs to 7-0 in league play.
Sarah Medina and Kelsey Eaton each shared top scoring honors with six goals and two assists. Medina collected four steals and three ejections earned while Eaton had a pair of steals.
Audrey Py added two goals to the Otay Ranch total while Tori Kelly had one goal, one assist and five steals and Mariela Rodriguez contributed one goal, one assist and two steals. Goalie Bri Patricio finished the game with 10 saves while Sara Gagarin had two steals.
The Mustangs scored off the opening face-off in the game, taking a 1-0 lead just seconds into the match and had racked up five goals before many spectators had a chance to seat themselves on the pool deck.
Hilltop, which finished 2-2 in the first round of league play, dropped its third straight second round contest to a league opponent to fall to 2-5 in league play.
Otay Ranch (19-3) was coming off a 3-2 showing at last week’s 38-team San Diego Open tournament. The Mustangs recorded victories against Canyon Crest (9-4), Helix (8-3) and Escondido (17-0) and dropped match-ups against Granite Hills (10-5) and Grossmont (6-4).
Eastlake finished 2-3 in tourney play with wins against Santana (12-10) and La Jolla Country Day (9-4) and losses to Escondido (9-7), La Costa Canyon (16-10) and Helix (10-9).
Bonita Vista defeated Mission Hills (17-3) and Olympian (24-6) while Hilltop bettered Monte Vista (15-4) while dropping contests to Grossmont (8-4), Point Loma (13-6), Canyon Crest (9-3) and Mar Vista (13-8).
The final order of finish at the top end of the tournament featured Bishop’s in firt place, Patrick Henry in second place, Granite Hills in third place, Torrey Pines in fourth place, Valhalla in fifth place, Westview in sixth place, Fallbrook in seventh place, Mt. Carmel in eighth place, Grossmont in ninth place, El Capitan in 10th place, Otay Ranch in 11th place and Escondido in 12th place.
