The Otay Ranch High School girls lacrosse team appears to be in a groove and also make that in a groovy mood. The Mustangs, two-time defending Metro Conference champions, picked up right where they left off after posting an undefeated first-round run through the league by defeating Eastlake, 10-7, on Monday.

Otay Ranch had reached the midpoint of its 2011 league schedule undefeated following a 12-2 victory at Bonita Vista on April 18. Prior to that, the Mustangs defeated visiting Mar Vista, 12-3, on April 14.

“Our whole team is in tune,” ORHS coach Manny Frutos said. “We’re picking up steam.”

Briana Hannes, the Mustangs’ leading scorer last year, scored nine goals to lead the effort against Mar Vista.

Otay Ranch took a 6-3 halftime lead against the Titans (2-4 in league play), with both teams playing to a 4-4 standoff in the second half.

Sarah Sedillo scored four goals to lead Eastlake.

Against Mar Vista, Jasmine Santa Maria, Cyndia Ortega and Rhona Presebe each scored single goals while Mustang goalie Krista Donaldson finished the game with eight saves.

“I’m proud of how the girls are playing,” Frutos said. “We’re starting to play a little better unsettled. The girls are starting to recognize each other, where they are on the field. All they need to do is think about a play and execute it. I can tell they are on the same page.”

A third consecutive league title would guarantee Otay Ranch a spot in the section playoffs — that’s easy reading.
