The Otay Ranch High School girls field hockey team defeated the host Bonita Vista Barons in strokes last Friday to remain undefeated in Metro Conference play. The win over the Barons built on a 3-1 victory the previous Friday against defending league champion Hilltop.
“The team has really just come together,” said Mustang coach Brianne Martinez. “They are able to get out of anything together. It’s a whole team effort.”
Otay Ranch had its perfect league season placed in jeopardy after Bonita Vista’s Boran Yoon scored the go-ahead goal in last Friday’s match. But Otay Ranch tied the game on an ensuing goal by Danica Satumbaga.
After a few tense moments in overtime, which finished scoreless, the teams then advanced to the strokes tiebreaker.
Both goalkeepers — Nancy Alvarez for the Barons and Alexis Horta for the Mustangs — starred in the extra round but Otay Ranch emerged with a 2-1 edge.
Jessamae Egana and Cynthia Perez each scored goals in the tiebreaker for the Mustangs, who improved to 5-0 in league play, 10-7-2 overall with the key victory.
While it’s been a team effort so far this season for Otay Ranch, individual standouts have been Satumbaga (goal leader) and Perez (assist leader).
The Mustangs are aiming to snare the school’s first-ever league championship. Toward that end, Otay Ranch and Hilltop will rematch Wednesday at Hilltop. Game time is 3 p.m.
