The Otay Ranch High School girls swim team continued to close in on this year’s Mesa League championship title after defeating both Hilltop and Olympian in recent dual meets.
The Mustangs improved to 4-0 in league competition after topping Olympian, 151-41, on April 19. Prior to that, Otay Ranch defeated Hilltop, 115-68, on April 12.
The Mustang boys team also swept its meets against Hilltop (117-67 on April 12) and Olympian (140-53 on April 19) to improve to 3-1 in league duals.
Otay Ranch's lone league loss remains against Eastlake.
In the dual match-up against Olympian, the Mustang boys and girls teams won all events, including relays and diving.
CIF qualifying times were turned in by Otay Ranch’s Sarah Medina (a new school record of 2:02.24 in the girls 200 freestyle), Isabel Parks (2:27.67 in the girls 200 individual medley), Mariela Rodriguez (27.01 in the girls 50 freestyle), Angeline Tapia (27.16 in the girls 50 freestyle), Sara Gagarin (5:42.22 in the girls 500 freestyle), Mathew Switzer (2:16.00 in the boys 200 IM) and Irbin Torres (58.57 in the boys 100 butterfly).
In the dual against Hilltop, Otay Ranch’s girls team won every event except the 100 freestyle while the Mustang boys team won every event except diving and the 100 breaststroke.
Medina clocked a then school record 2:02.54 in the 200 freestyle (before breaking it a week later against Olympian), while Larysa Lucatero (1:07.02) and Rodriguez (5:51.15) also notched CIF qualifying times in the 100 backstroke and 500 freestyle, respectively.
Torres led Otay’s boys team with a CIF qualifying mark in the butterfly (59.0).
The diving portion of the Hilltop-Otay Ranch dual produced high-end scores from Hilltop’s Aaron Siaumau (182.05 points) and Otay Ranch’s Zully Maldonado (160.9 points).
Siaumau recorded a score of 197.4 points in a dual meet at Mater Dei Catholic’s spanking new on campus pool on April 19.
Hilltop swept the dual meet at MDC by scores of 119-63 (boys) and 111-50 (girls).
