Mustangs bust out of corral to start 2012 high school track season

The Otay Ranch High School track and field team finished second to Gila Ridge in both the boys and girls varsity team standings at the Optimist Desert Classic Relays held March 10 at Central Union High School in El Centro.

The Mustangs came home with a number of top individual performances in the finals and split-time relay events. They included Steven Martinez (2:05) and Rodrigo Baza in the boys 800-meter run (2:06), Zach Velasquez in the boys 1,600 run (4:38.2), Sean Esteban in the boys triple jump (42-10), Monique Anguiano in the girls 400 meters (1:11.5), Carina Gillespie in the girls 800 meters (2:24) and 1,200 meters (3:56.1), Blanca De La Rocha in the girls 1,600 (5:46.2) and 3,200 meters (12:27.21), and Alyssa Chang in the girls 100 hurdles (16.02).

Briana Davis won the girls high jump (4-10) while finishing second in both the 100 dash (13.28) and triple jump (31-6.25).

Otay Ranch captured the boys distance medley in 11:00.47 and the girls distance medley in 13:45.14 — an event comprising relay legs of 1,200, 400, 800 and 1,600 meters.

The Mustangs also captured first place in the girls 4x800 relay. Vanessa Zarate was second in the girls discus throw (87-5).

Otay Ranch stepped off the 2012 season by competing in a tri-meet against Valley Center and Poway on March 8.

Top showings by the host Mustangs included James Andrews (2:10.28) in the boys 800; Martinez (4:37.79) in the boys 1,600; Aldo Moreno (11:08.25) in the boys 3,200; Gary Birtwell (132-9) in the boys discus throw; Xander Law (14-0) in the boys pole vault; Esteban (45-1) in the boys triple jump; Kiera Williams (1:02.49) in the girls 400 dash; Gillespie (5:35.22) in the girls 1,600; Catie LeDesma (11:34.04) in the girls 3,200; Chang (15.75) in the girls 100 hurdles; and Davis (32-4) in the girls triple jump.
