Mustang polo girls win another, edge Bonita Vista, 8-6, in key Mesa League encounter

Emma Cornwell made 15 saves with one five-meter block and scored a goal from the cage to help lift Otay Ranch to a key 8-6 victory against Bonita Vista in a Mesa League girls water polo game Friday evening at Southwestern College.

The win raised the Mustangs league record to 5-0 while the Barons dropped to 3-2 in league play.

Otay Ranch continues to remain undefeated in league play with three league games remaining.

Katie Sutterfield scored three goals and contributed one assist in the Mustangs’ winning cause while Kendra Gregory had two goal and six steals. Gabby Nunez had one goal and one steal while Karina Espinosa had one goal. Fernanda Arambula had two ejections earned, one steal and one assist while Camy Benitez had one steal and one ejection earned. Alexis Lopez had three steals and one ejection earned.

Otay Ranch improved its season record to 16-2 overall. “The Mustang girls continue to get better each week,” ORHS coach Ernie Medina noted.

The Mustangs closed out the opening round of league play on Wednesday by defeating host Mater Dei Catholic, 11-1, in an afternoon match-up. In that game, which started with a 3-0 Otay Ranch first quarter lead, Arambula led the Mustangs with six goals while Sutterfield had two goals and teammates Gregory, Benetiz and Monica Salcedo each scored once.

Jenna Kruse scored the lone goal for Mater Dei Catholic while goalie Lindsey Finch made six saves.

Bonita Vista improved to 3-1 in league play, 9-3 overall, following Wednesday’s victory against Eastlake (now 2-2 in league).

The Barons previously defeated Hilltop, 11-3, on Tuesday.

Over last weekend, the Mustangs recorded an impressive runner-up finish in the East County Invitational. Otay Ranch opened tourney play with a 7-6 victory against Valley Center Jan. 20 at West Hills High School., then followed that up with an 11-2 victory against Monte Vista last Friday.

The Mustangs edged resident South Bay League power Mar Vista, 7-6 in the tournament semifinals on Saturday and then dropped a 9-2 decision to Ramona in the championship game.

Mar Vista dropped an 8-7 match-up to Rancho Buena Vista in the third-place contest.

Cornwell and Arambula made the all-tournament team for Otay along with Mar Vista’s Isabelle Hastings.
