Glendale Community College seemed to be taking it on the chin for most of the first half, trailing 35-30 at halftime. But coach Brian Beauchemin’s 2-0 Vaqueros responded to the deafening thunder and lightning that descended on Southwestern’s gym last Friday by coming out raging in the second half.
Coach John Cosentino’s 1-3 Southwestern’s squad seemed to have Glendale’s attack solved. Then came halftime. The storm was so loud that it nearly shook the rafters of the gymnasium. Rain and hail pounded down on the roof causing everyone present to look up to see if the sky really was falling.
Things settled down and Glendale started the second half with an 11-0 run to build a lead they never gave up.
Six-foot-seven Goran Plavchyan led Glendale with 21 points, including several explosive dunks. Jalen Etienne added 17 for the Vaqueros.
In spite of giving up so many points after intermission, Southwestern didn’t give up and it appeared they might even overtake Glendale before the Vaqueros nailed the lid shut.
Shawn Lathan led Southwestern with 16 points, followed by Jacob Craig with 12.
