Mariners, Cougars, Raiders tip off South Bay League hoops play undefeated

The South Bay League boys basketball season is still in its early stages but three teams finished the opening week of league play with undefeated records. Mar Vista entered the week 2-0 while San Ysidro and Southwest both won their league openers.

San Ysidro is off to the best start of the bunch by improving to 11-4 overall after defeating Montgomery, 74-42, on Jan. 5. Four players scored in double figures for the Cougars. Armondo Guzman led the foursome with 15 points, while Ronald Stewart poured in 14 points and Javion Watson and Eddie Martin each collected 13 points.

Brendon and Chandler Tarrant each had six rebounds for San Ysidro.

Southwest improved to 10-6 overall after dominating host Sweetwater, 64-49, last Friday. The Raiders zoomed in front 22-8 after the first quarter and led 35-14 at halftime before the Red Devils (1-1, 5-7) mustered 35 second-half points.

Lamar Weston dropped in 20 points to pace Southwest while teammate Alex Villegas collected 10 points. Marcus Gladden and Pierre Davis each scored eight points in the win.
SuHi’s Spencer Mattox led all scorers in the game with 21 points while teammate Adam Aguon tacked on 11 points.

Mar Vista entered the week 9-8 overall after defeating Castle Park (54-35 on Jan. 5) and Montgomery (58-49 last Friday) in its first two league encounters.

Demarcus Henderson led a balanced offensive attack in the game against Castle Park (1-1, 7-11). Jessoph Jameson and Deandre Cretain each had nine points in the game while Tim Riley contributed eight points and Lex Leyva had seven points.

In the ensuing victory over Montgomery, Henderson and Jameson each pumped in 17 points while Riley and Leyva each collected eight points.

Castle Park defeated Olympian, 52-49, last Friday to pick up its first league win of 2011. Stephen Sommers led the Trojans with 16 points while Tyrone Eden poured in 14 points. Both players finished the game with five rebounds.

Michael White paced Olympian (0-2, 5-10) with 10 points.

Sweetwater tipped off league play with a 74-67 victory against Olympian on Jan. 5. Ran San Nicolas keyed the Red Devils with 20 points while Mattox and Junior Bautista followed on the score sheet with 18 and 14 points, respectively. Jonathan Gonzalez contributed 12 points to add to the balanced attack.

Mattox grabbed eight rebounds while Bautista collected seven boards.

Cobrin Humphrey led all scorers in the game with 27 points while teammate Billy Moses scored 15 points. Stephen Davis sank 11 points on the night, also for the Eagles.
