The Hilltop Lancers lost to San Clemente, 3-0, on Dec. 5 to conclude play in the Coronado tournament with a 3-1 record but have quickly rebounded with four non-league victories to improve to 7-1 on the season.
The Lancers defeated host Torrey Pines, 3-1, on Dec. 8 behind goals from Omar Hernandez, Abdiel Flores and Rigoberto Maciel.
Hilltop then reeled off three consecutive wins to kick-start the Grossmont Conference Holiday Tournament. The Lancers defeated Calexico, 4-1, then shut out Santana, 5-0, in a pair of games last Saturday. Hilltop doubled up Steele Canyon, 4-2, on Monday in a game played in heavy rain and wind.
“The boys from each team battled not only each other but also the elements,” HHS coach John Salts said.
The Cougars led 1-0 at the half before Maciel scored just 37 seconds into the second half, opening a floodgate of four consecutive goals by the defending Mesa League champions.
The Lancers resume play in the Grossmont tourney Saturday against Valhalla in a 9:30 a.m. game at Granite Hills High School. However, prior to that Hilltop will meet Poway in a high profile non-league match-up Friday at 6 p.m. at the Titans’ home field.
Following this weekend’s action, the Lancers are off until opening Mesa League Jan. 18 at Eastlake.
Hernandez had two goals each in the victories over Calexico and Steele Canyon and four goals in the win over Santana. The football/basketball standout leads the team with 12 goals and three assists.
Jimmy Estrada ranks second on the team with five goals and 13 assists.
