The Holtville wrestling tournament celebrated its 50th anniversary last weekend and two Metro Conference mat men feted the occasion by advancing to the championship finals.
Hilltop’s Cruz Jaime (115 pounds) and Mater Dei Catholic’s Alejandro Rivera (140) both finished second in their respective weight classes after going 4-1 in the two-day tournament that wrapped up last Saturday.
Jaime dropped a 9-1 decision to Brawley’s Vicente Elizalde while Valley Center’s Aden Garcia defeated Rivera by a 15-0 technical fall.
Overall, five Metro wrestlers earned medals. Hilltop’s Jordan Griffin finished third at 122 pounds with a 5-1 record after besting Brawley’s Isaac Moreno by a 5-3 decision.
Mater Dei Catholic’s Sean O’Rourke finished fourth at 134 pounds with a 5-2 record while Eastlake’s Austin Ortiz (197) and Jamar Adams (222) both finished fourth with 4-2 records. Hilltop’s Anthony Ardagna (162) was sixth with a 4-3 record.
Hilltop finished ninth in the 25-team tourney while Eastlake was 12th. Brawley won the team title, followed by runner-up Rancho Bernardo and third-place finisher Valley Center.
