The Otay Ranch High School boys water polo team is off to its best start in seven seasons but the youthful Mustangs were no match for the Hilltop Lancers in Monday’s Mesa League match-up at the Parkway pool.
Hilltop won, 12-2, to even its league record at 2-2. The Lancers held the Mustangs scoreless until midway through the fourth quarter while building an 11-0 lead.
The loss dropped Otay Ranch to 7-8 overall, 0-3 in league.
Despite the setback, ORHS coach Ernie Medina feels his charges have played “well as a young team.”
The Mustangs, who start five sophomores, one junior and one freshman, dropped a 12-5 decision to five-time defending league champion Eastlake on Oct. 16.
“Even though Otay is having a ‘learning’ season, some of the players are standing out and playing the best Otay has played in seven seasons,” Medina said.
“Our goal this season is to improve on the past few seasons. I believe we can build with this young team and develop into a strong program.”
Hilltop was coming off a third-place finish in the previous week’s 16-team East County Invitational. The Lancers dropped a 5-4 decision to Mar Vista in the semifinals before edging Mission Hills, 7-6, to close out tourney play.
Valhalla defeated Mar Vista, 8-5, in the finals.
Carlos Lizarraga scored the opening three goals in Monday’s game and tacked on another in the second quarter to lead Hilltop with four goals. Emilio Maldonado scored three goals for the Lancers while Andy Becerra and Elias Munoz each scored twice and Wyatt Schmidt scored once.
David Del Rincon and Eddie Rosenfeld scored goals for Otay. Rosenfeld has 44 goals this year.
Lizarraga scored four goals and Josue Macias recorded 16 goalie saves in the win over Mission Hills; Maldonado racked up three goals in a 10-8 league victory against Bonita Vista last Friday.
Mater Dei Catholic sank visiting Otay Ranch, 12-4, on Wednesday to even its league record at 2-2.
Previously, Bonita Vista posted a 11-7 victory against MDC.
