Hearing for man who struck police car

A preliminary hearing was set last week for Feb. 21, 2013, for a suspected gang member who is accused of attempted murder of a Chula Vista Police officer by trying to hit him with his car.

The incident occurred on Sept. 5 around 11:35 p.m. when officer Glen Gossett saw a vehicle driving erratically on

Third Avenue and G Street. The officer tried to pull over the vehicle, but it struck a concrete wall in a Third Avenue alley.

Anticipating a foot pursuit, Gossett got out of his patrol car, but Gerardo Rodriguez Meza, 22, of Chula Vista, went in reverse, hitting the patrol car and allegedly tried to hit the officer.

Gossett fired several shots and wasn’t hit by the car, but his vehicle was struck again. Meza drove off and abandoned the car, but he was arrested Sept. 12 at a relative’s house in Colton in San Bernardino County. Meza has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
