Girls water polo: Otay Ranch places fourth in East County Invitational

The Otay Ranch Mustangs dropped their final two games in the East County Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 26, to finish in fourth place. The Mustangs came up short by a 7-3 score against Ramona in the semifinals and lost 8-7 to Helix in the bronze medal game.

Westview defeated Ramona, 9-1, in the championship game to cap play in the 16-team tournament.

Otay Ranch’s Sarah Medina was selected to the all-tournament team after compiling 21 goals, 15 ejections earned, four-five meters earned and 40 steals in five games.

Medina now has 103 goals and is nearing the school record of 124 set by Roni Coffer. Medina is also chasing her own school record of 151 steals with 138 so far.

Also, ORHS goalie Emma Cornwell has four shutouts this season and is aiming for the San Diego Section of five. She had two more one-point games against Point Loma and Monte Vista at the ECI.

The Mustangs defeated Point Loma and Monte Vista by identical scores of 13-1.

Medina had seven goals, one assist and nine steals in the win over Point Loma on Friday, Jan. 25, and had seven goals and 12 steals in the victory against Monte Vista.

Otay Ranch, which next tests Bonita Vista in a Mesa League game Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Mater Dei Catholic High School, is 12-5 on the season.
