Girls water polo: Otay Ranch Mustangs finish unbeaten in first turn through Mesa League

The Otay Ranch High School girls water polo team defeated Eastlake, 9-1, Wednesday evening at Southwestern College to conclude the first round of Mesa League play as the five-team circuit’s lone undefeated team. The Mustangs improved to 4-0 in league play, 12-2 overall, after defeating the Titans.

The eight-goal margin of victory was the narrowest thus far through four league games turned in by Otay Ranch.

The loss dropped Eastlake to 1-3 in league play.

Kelsey Eaton led the Mustangs to their latest victory by scoring a game-high six goals. Team scoring leader Sarah Medina chipped in with two goals while Mariela Rodriguez rounded out team scoring with one goal. Bri Patricio was the backbone of the OR victory with 12 saves.

Medina led the team with six steals and also had four assits while Eaton had three steals and Rodriguez also contributed four steals and one assist.

Audrey Py had one assist and three steals while Sara Gagarin had one assist and one steal and Tori Kelly made three steals.

Bonita Vista, which had a bye on Wednesday, remains in second place in the league standings with a 3-1 Mesa mark.

Hilltop improved to 2-2 in league play by defeating Mater Dei Catholic, 11-6, in an afternoon game on Wednesday at the Parkway pool. Veronica Guzman led the Lancers with six goals, followed on the score sheet by Brianna Conser with three goals. Ariana Gutierrez and Christine Sherwood each contributed one goal to the Hilltop victory while starting goalie Aurora Clark was credited with five saves.

Colleen Ratcliff paced MDC (0-4 in league, 6-5 overall) with five goals.

Otay Ranch improved to 3-0 in league play following last Friday's (Jan. 20) 14-1 victory against Hilltop at the Loma Verde pool.

Medina led the Mustangs with six goals, eight steals and four assists while Eaton collected four goals, four steals and three assists in the game. Py contributed three goals, three steals and two assists while teammate Gagarin had one goal, five steals and one assist. Rodriguez had five steals and two assists whie Kelly had three steals and one assist. Patricio was credited with five goalie saves.
