It didn’t take long for the local air currents to help introduce the surrounding community to Lil’ Alex BBQ, located at 4020 Bonita Road in eastern Chula Vista.
The mesquite smoke, mixed with a robust barbecue aroma, wafted directly over the nearby Chula Vista Municipal Golf Course. Before long, the restaurant had a line going out the door of curious golfers eager to sample the cuisine at the new eatery.
Lil’ Alex BBQ is named for 10-month old toddler Alex Almanzar, whose family opened the restaurant. The clean and spacious dining facility, decorated in a western motif, features four flat screen TV monitors. The atmosphere is casual and entices customers to sit down to enjoy a tasty lunch or dinner while watching their favorite sporting events.
Jose Almanzar, Lil’ Alex’s father, brings 13 years of experience as a chef to the new venture. He originally brought his family to the United States from Guadalajara, Mexico. But rather than open another Mexican eatery in the area, the family made the bold decision to opt for barbecue, and it’s been a good choice so far with the scarcity of such establishments in the South Bay.
The homemade Texas-style barbecue sauce is both sweet and tangy and comes already slathered on the meat. We liked the pulled pork sandwich ($8.75), Santa Fe tri-tip combo ($13.95) and quarter chicken ($7.25). The hot wings, served with hot sauce or barbecue sauce, also are a winner here.
The restaurant has a child’s menu, homemade cheesecake and chocolate cake for dessert and also serves orders to go.
