Scripps Ranch defeated Steele Canyon, 4-3, to capture the championship title of this year’s Hilltop softball tournament in finals played last Saturday at Hilltop High School.
Both teams eliminated Metro Conference teams along the way to meeting in the title game. Eight teams, including three from the South Bay, qualified for this year’s quarterfinals.
Quarterfinal, semifinal and the championship game were held last Saturday on site.
Steele Canyon knocked out Olympian (10-2 in the quarterfinals) before ending Otay Ranch’s run to the semifinals with a 13-8 victory.
Scripps Ranch eliminated Hilltop in the teams’ opening quarterfinal game.
Otay Ranch was the lone Metro team to post a playoff victory in the tourney finals, defeating East County power El Capitan, 2-0, on the strength of RBIs from Sarah Adkins and Josie Bachtell and the combined six-hitter from Bachtell and teammate Adri Puentes.
Sonia Mazon and Bachtell both scored runs for the Mustangs, who made the most of their five hits in the game.
Mazon doubled while Bachtell slammed a solo home run to account for Otay Ranch’s two extra-base hits. Niki Fernandez, Puentes and Adkins each stroked singles.
The Mustangs were otherwise stymied by El Capitan’s pitching, which accounted for 12 strikeouts in the game.
Bachtell pitched five innings and allowed four hits while Puentes gave up two hits in two innings of work.
Otay Ranch was eliminated from championship contention after dropping a 13-8 semifinal decision to the Cougars, who rapped out 20 hits in the contest.
Kylie Steagall led Steele Canyon with four hits and three RBI while also pitching all seven innings, allowing eight hits, four earned runs and striking out four batters.
The Cougars led 8-0 entering the bottom of the fourth inning.
Jonee Rutledge keyed the Mustangs in the semifinal loss with three hits, two runs scored and five RBI while Carlee Wood scored three runs and drove in two others.
Rutledge stroked two home runs in the game.
Puentes took the loss in the pitching circle. She pitched five innings, allowing four earned runs.
The Mustangs, who fell to 7-4 on the season following the setback, previously dropped a 10-1 decision to Steele Canyon in tournament pool play.
For the season, Sashel Palacios leads Otay Ranch with a .464 hitting average, followed by Rutledge at .410 with 15 RBI and three home runs.
Steele Canyon led, 2-0, at one point in the championship game but Scripps Ranch took the lead on two unearned runs.
The Cougars had a chance to tie the game but had a base runner thrown out at the plate on the final play of the game.
The Falcons improved to 8-5 with the championship game victory while Steele Canyon fell to 11-4.
