Drunk driver gets prison term

A Chula Vista man pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated in connection with the death of Robin Fortson, 54, who was killed on Christmas night as she crossed a street in Chula Vista.

Angel Rodrigo Gutierrez, 23, has agreed to accept a prison term of six years and four months, according to Deputy District Attorney Cally Bright.

Sentencing was set for July 28 by Chula Vista Superior Court Judge Kathleen Lewis. Gutierrez remains in the South Bay Detention Facility on $150,000 bail. He pleaded guilty June 22.

Fortson, also of Chula Vista, was crossing Third Avenue near Oxford Street about 8:30 p.m. Dec. 25. Witnesses who saw the collision followed the defendant as he made a U-turn and left the scene. Fortson was pronounced dead at the scene.

Bright said Gutierrez consumed a lot of beers when he celebrated Christmas with his family.

His vehicle was found about two hours after the collision.

A friend had driven him home, where he was arrested about six hours after the crash. His blood- alcohol level was .29, which is almost four times the legal limit, prosecutors said.
