Chula Vista South’s Pony-14 all-stars wrapped up play Monday with a third-place finish at the West Zone/Southwest Region championship tournament hosted by Chula Vista North Pony League.
CV South ended its season with a 5-4 setback to La Jolla to finish the region tournament with a 3-2 record after going 4-1 to win the San Diego East Section title.
“Last year we made it to the Super Region with our 14-year-old team and this year we wanted to make it to the West Zone tournament and make it to the World Series,” CVS manager Victor Sandoval said. “Whenever you accomplish something, you always want to take the next step.”
CV South opened regional play with a dominating 16-1 victory against Carlsbad on July 11. The game was halted due to the mercy rule after five innings.
Leonardo Perez, Pablo Triana, Arturo Saenz and Rigo Duarte all spent time on the hill in collectively pitching their team to a victory.
Andres Cortez blasted a three-run home run measured at 300 feet while Perez cracked a two-run home run, Saenz went 2-for-3 with one RBI, Issac Piche went 2-for-2 with three RBI and Duarte went 3-for-3 with two RBI.
However, CV South lost its next game, 17-2, to La Jolla on Saturday and dropped into the single-elimination challenger bracket. CVS staved off elimination with two consecutive victories on Sunday — 5-0 against Escondido and 7-3 against Tecolote — to advance to Monday’s challenger bracket final (and rematch) against La Jolla.
Andres Quintero hurled a complete game effort with support from teammates Piche (three hits), Duarte (three hits) and Saenz (double) at the plate in the win over Tecolote.
Cortez pitched a two-hitter against Escondido. Saenz doubled in that game while Duarte picked up one RBI, Perez slammed a home run and Carlos Cosio smashed a double that scored two runs.
The top three finishers at the San Diego East Section tournament, played June 22 to July 1 in Ramona, advanced to the region championships. Chula Vista South defeated La Jolla, 12-4, to win the title while Ramona finished third.
Sandoval credited both hitting and pitching for the team’s success en route to winning the section banner.
CVS opened 3-0 with victories against El Cajon (8-5), Alpine (15-3) and Ramona (9-1) before being clipped, 5-4, by La Jolla.
The setback to La Jolla necessitated a second game played on July 1 to settle the championship, which CV South captured by a handy margin.
Perez went 3-for-4 in the championship game while Piche closed out the game to earn the win.
Chula Vista South’s Pony-13 team finished third at both the San Diego Section tournament (June 22-29 in San Marcos) and Southwest regional tournament (July 1-9 at Tecolote Pony League) before ending its season last weekend at the Super Region tournament in Whittier.
CV South finished 2-2 at the section tournament, dropping match-ups against Chula Vista North (8-7) and Mira Mesa (5-3). (CV North won the section title with a 4-0 shutout over Mira Mesa.)
The top three finishers at the section tournament advanced to the region tournament.
CV South went 3-2 at the regional, posting three consecutive victories in the elimination bracket against El Cajon (9-0), Chula Vista North (7-5) and Tecolote (6-4).
Ramona claimed a 7-6 win over CV South in the challenger bracket final, also played on July 7. Lakeside won the region title with an 18-2 victory on July 9.
The top three teams advanced to the Super Region tournament.
CV South finished 2-2 at the Super Region, winning two elimination games after opening the tournament July 11 with a 4-2 setback to Sierra Madre.
CVS defeated Mission Viejo-A, 2-1, on Saturday and eliminated Ramona, 9-5, on Sunday before being eliminated itself in an 11-7 loss to Los Alamitos-A, also on Sunday.
