CP Trojans de-claw Cougars, 35-7, to pick up first win of season

The Castle Park Trojans put their season opening 47-14 loss to the visiting Kearny Komets behind them to get into the win column for the first time this season via last Friday’s 35-7 non-league victory over the host San Ysidro Cougars.

“It took us a while to get in (the end zone),” CP coach Hans Graham said. “San Ysidro showed up to play. But we were just persistent at what we did and got them on their heals a bit. We just kept wearing them down.”

Daniel Hernandez rushed 15 times for 118 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead the Trojans, who ran for 186 yards as a team and passed for 170 additional yards.

Quarterback Juan Luna completed four of his six passing attempts, hitting David Anderson on a 61-yard scoring pass. Manny Salcedo had one catch for 39 yards while Nicolas Martinez had one catch for 40 yards.

Hernandez also had two catches for 30 yards.

Aaron Leon rushed eight times for 24 yards and scored one touchdown while Mario Perez recovered a fumble and returned it 54 yards for another score.

Luna also kicked five PAT conversions. The Trojans led 28-0 at halftime.

Cristian Garcia completed six of 16 passing attempts for 63 yards, including a touchdown pass to Rajae Robertson for San Ysidro’s lone score in the game.

Fidel Gonzalez rushed eight times for 96 yards as the Cougars finished the night with 153 rushing yards.

Castle Park (1-1) plays at San Diego (1-1) on Friday, Sept. 16. The non-league game kicks off at 6:30 p.m. at Balboa Stadium.

San Ysidro (0-2) will look for its first win of the season when it visits El Cajon Valley (0-2) in another non-league match-up. Kick-off is 7 p.m.

Mater Dei Catholic 48, Escondido Charter 12

The Crusaders remained in the victory column by zooming in front 41-6 at halftime against the White Tigers. Mater Dei Catholic, boosted by a 53-yard touchdown run by quarterback Jack Fernandes, led 21-0 after the first quarter.

The Crusaders put their 2-0 record on the line Friday at Mesa College against the likewise undefeated St. Augustine Saints.

Joe Kennedy threw six scoring passes, including three to Nicholas Gonsalves and two to Patrick Dixon, in last Friday’s 49-7 win against Hoover. Dixon also caught a touchdown pass from Jojo Hudson. Seamus McMorrow kicked five PAT conversions.
