The San Diego Section has announced brackets for this year’s boys volleyball and girls lacrosse championship playoffs. The boys volleyball playoffs will feature four divisions while the girls field hockey playoffs will feature three divisions, including a new elite eight-team Open Division.
The eight-time league champion Otay Ranch Mustangs earned the No. 1 seed in the boys volleyball Division I field. The Mustangs (10-0 in Mesa League play, 29-4 overall) will receive a bye in Tuesday’s opening round and host the winner between eighth-seeded El Camino (21-11) and ninth-seeded Granite Hills (19-12) in the quarterfinals on Friday, May 10, at 7 p.m.
The semifinals are scheduled May 14 at the home site of the higher seeded team. The division championship game is scheduled May 18 at 5 .m. at Cathedral Catholic High School.
Otay Ranch, which closed out regular season play with a 3-0 sweep (25-17, 25-11, 25-17) of visiting Bonita Vista last Friday, will be aiming to win its third consecutive division championship after previously defeating Torrey Pines (2011) and Poway (2012).
Andrew Freiha led the Mustangs in last Friday’s win over the Barons, who finished 3-7 in league play (5-18 overall) with 22 kills while teammate Adrian Ventura racked up 28 assists and three players each recorded 10 digs: Nick Gutierrez, Jared Arias and Brandon Gullaba.
The Eastlake Titans join the Mesa League rival Mustangs in the Division I field. The third-seeded Titans (8-2 in league, 18-11 overall) also received a bye in Tuesday’s opening round and will host either sixth-seeded Poway (10-21) or 11th-seed Escondido (18-12) in Friday’s quarterfinals.
Eastlake tuned up for the playoffs by defeating host Hilltop 25-9, 25-13, 25-8 in the teams’ regular season finale last Friday.
The Titans’ two league losses were against the Mustangs.
Eastlake and Otay Ranch are among eight Metro Conference teams to earn positions in this year’s CIF playoffs.
Hilltop (4-6 in Mesa League, 13-15 overall) received the No. 11 seed in the Division II field and will play at sixth-seeded Mt. Carmel (12-15) on Tuesday. The winner advances to play at third-seeded Westview (17-15) in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
The Division III bracket is braced by four Metro teams, including three from the South Bay League.
South Bay League champion Montgomery (11-1 in league, 22-5) earned the highest seed among the four South County entrants. The eighth-seeded Aztecs will host ninth-seeded Santana (7-1 in Grossmont Valley League, 10-12 overall) in Tuesday’s first round. The winner advances to meet top-seeded Del Norte (18-8) in Friday’s quarterfinals.
Montgomery is led by Terrill Williams (310 kills, 23 aces, 129 blocks), Omar Rodriguez (207 kills, 144 digs), Frank Ebalida (26 aces, 581 assists), Christian Sotto (302 digs) and Aaron Martos (120 digs) and David Tschakert (351 digs).
Mar Vista (10-2 in South Bay League, 18-9 overall) collected the No. 10 seed in the division and will play at seventh-seeded University City on Tuesday. The winner plays at second-seeded La Jolla (14-2) on Friday.
The league runner-up Mariners are paced by Robert Tschakert (274 kills, 24 aces, 49 blocks), Gabriel Gonzales (241 kills, 42 aces, 268 digs), Joel Vado (169 kills, 102 blocks) and Nico Medellin (24 aces, 156 digs, 758 assists).
Olympian (5-5 in Mesa League, 13-16 overall) is seeded 11th and will play at sixth-seeded Lincoln (16-6) in Tuesday’s opening round. The winner advances to play at third-seeded Canyon Crest Academy (16-17) on Friday.
Castle Park (7-5 in South Bay League, 7-5 overall) received the No. 12 seed and will open at fifth-seeded St. Augustine (11-16) on Tuesday, with the winner moving onto the quarterfinal round Friday against fourth-seeded Cathedral Catholic (11-9).
Despite finishing 0-10 in Mesa League play, the Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders received the No. 12 seed in Division IV. The Crusaders will battle fifth-seeded Coronado (12-12) in Tuesday’s opening round. The winner advances to Saturday’s quarterfinals against fourth-seeded Sante Fe Christian (12-11).

The South Bay League champion Montgomery Aztecs (23-5) swept the visiting Santana Sultans by scores of 25-16, 25-17, 25-21 in Tuesday’s opening round of the Division III San Diego Section playoffs behind 13 kills by Terrill Williams.
In the Division I playoffs, the top-seeded Otay Ranch Mustangs (29-4) and third-seeded Eastlake Titans (18-11) will each host quarterfinal round games on Friday, May 10. Game time is 7 p.m. Otay Ranch will play El Camino; Eastlake will host Escondido.
Girls lacrosse: Hilltop, Eastlake and Bonita Vista are playoff bound
The Hilltop Lancers captured their second consecutive Metro Conference championship after finishing 10-0 in league play, 13-7 overall. The Lancers received the No. 5 seed in the revamped Division I playoffs and will host 12th-seeded Francis Parker (2-12) in Wednesday’s opening round. Game time is 6 p.m.
The Hilltop-Francis Parker winner advances to meet fourth-seeded Mt. Carmel (11-5) in Saturday’s quarterfinal round at 11 a.m.
The division semifinals are scheduled May 14, followed by the championship game May 18 at Coronado High School (3 p.m.).
Hilltop closed out regular season play last Friday with an 11-1 victory against visiting Otay Ranch.
Twelve teams each qualified in Division I and Division II. The new Open Division included eight teams.
Division II entrants include seventh-seeded Eastlake (7-3 in Metro play, 11-4 overall) and ninth-seeded Bonita Vista (6-4 in league, 10-8 overall).
Eastlake, which finished runner-up to Hilltop in the league standings, will host 10th-seeded Monte Vista (7-12) in Thursday’s opening round (game time is TBA). The winner advances to play at second-seeded Valley Center (14-5) on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Bonita Vista will play at eighth-seeded Helix (6-11) in Thursday’s opening round at 4 p.m. The winner advances to play at top-seeded Del Norte (11-11) in Saturday’s quarterfinals at 11 a.m.
The Division II semifinals are scheduled May 15; the division championship game is May 18 (1 p.m. at Coronado High School).
The new Open Division features, in seeding order, No. 1 La Costa Canyon (20-4), No. 2 Coronado (17-5), No. 3 Poway (10-11), No. 4 Westview (16-5), No. 5 Torrey Pines (7-8), No. 6 Scripps Ranch (11-5), No. 7 Rancho Bernardo (8-12) and No. 8 La Jolla (12-4).
The Open Division playoffs will consist of three rounds. Semifinal games are scheduled May 15, followed by the championship game May 18 (5 p.m. at Coronado High School).
