Chula Vista South Pony League President Gabriel Diaz is a very proud man. With three No. 1 seeded teams in this year’s West Zone/Southern California Southwest Super Region tournaments, why shouldn’t he be?

“This is the most success we’ve had,” Diaz said. “This is a good year for us.”

CV South has either advanced teams to or wrapped up play in Southwest Super Region tournaments in five divisions: Shetland (ages 4-6), Mustang (9-10), Bronco (11-12), Pony (13-14) and Colt (15-16).

CV South’s first-year entry in the Colt Division provided the most punch as the untested team went 4-0 at the regional tournament in San Bernardino. CVS topped, in order, Redlands (12-2), Colton (12-9), Victoria (6-2) and, in Monday’s championship game, Colton (6-3).

The CVS Colt team opens super region play Friday in Whittier.

CV South Grey defeated North City, 10-2, to win the San Diego Section Mustang-10 championship tourney that wrapped up July 2 in Ramona. CV South then defeated Carlsbad, 8-3, to win the Southwest Region championship July 11 in Carlsbad to advance to the Southwest Super Region tournament.

Play in the latter tournament wraps up Tuesday in San Marcos.

CV South’s Bronco-12 team finished second to Ramona at the San Diego South/East Section tournament July 2 in Ramona before going on to top the field with a 10-2 victory against Ramona July 11 in San Marcos.

The top-seeded CVS Bronco-12 team opens super region play Friday in Whittier.

CV South’s Pony-13 team finished third at the Southwest Region tournament to earn a berth in the Southwest Super Region tournament, finishing 2-2 in play last week in Whittier.

The CVS Shetland team finished fourth at the San Diego South/East Section tournament (June 22-29 in San Marcos) to advance to the Super Region tournament that wrapped up Sunday in West Covina.

CV South dropped pool contests to La Mirada (18-7) and Temecula (14-4) to miss advancing to bracket play.
