Bonita Vista High School alumnus Eric Avila earned All-American honors at the recent NAIA Track & Field Indoor National Championships in Geneva, Ohio, after he helped Southern Oregon University set a new meet record in the distance medley relay.
Avila ran the final 1,600-meter anchor leg in the relay event that also consisted of legs of 1,200, 400 and 800 meters. The Southern Oregon foursome timed 9:48.16. The previous record had been 9:50.88, set by Azusa Pacific in 2009.
Last year in outdoor track, Avila also earned All-American honors after finishing sixth at the NAIA national championships in the mile.
As a senior at Bonita Vista in 2006-07, Avila was a San Diego Section champion in cross country (Division I) and also a section track champion in the 3,200 meters. He went on to win the state title in the 3,200 distance.
Avila’s goal is to qualify to run in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
The 2013 NAIA indoor championship meet took place Feb. 28 to March 2.
