Bonita Vista will take its potent passing game into action Friday at Olympian High School against the winless Hilltop Lancers. Austin Kane passed for 354 yards and three touchdowns in last Friday’s 49-33 non-league victory at Scripps Ranch.
The Barons’ rushing game also got untracked with 303 yards and four TDs.
“The offensive line was simply awesome, led by center Joey Snider, guards Steven Green and D.J. Sealee and tackles Christian Montes and Alex Ohlendorf,” BVHS coach Greg Raby said. “They opened up gaping holes all night and gave Austin Kane ample time to get the ball to the wide receivers. Any time an offense can have the balance we had in both the running and passing game they will be extremely difficult to defend.”
Wide receiver Atal Khaliq caught nine passes for 227 yards to set a single-game school record. He leads the section with 460 receiving yards through four games.
Last week, Josh Santos led the Barons (2-2) with 101 yards on nine carries, including a 68-yard run on the game’s first play. Delvon Miller had 12 carries for 91 yards.
Kane, Santos, Miller and Angel Landavazo each scored rushing touchdowns while Khaliq, Caleb Su (three catches, 77 yards) and Robert Garza each hauled in scoring passes.
Defensively, Su blocked a field goal attempt while Ross Brisebois intercepted a pass. Brisebois led the team with 11 tackles while Moises Villalpando chipped in with nine solo tackles.
“Our defense made some crucial second-half adjustments and held Scripps Ranch to seven second-half points,” Raby said.
The Barons held a tenuous 35-33 lead deep into the third quarter before their offense took charge with two touchdowns.
“We came out fired up in the second half, forcing turnovers that set up our offense ” Villalpando said. “This was a big win for us. We really needed to be in a dog-fight like this one to prove to ourselves that we can finish a close game.”
David Villasenor converted all seven extra-point kicks he attempted in the game.
Bonita Vista and Hilltop are in the same playoff division: big game.
