Barons, Titans deadlock for Mesa League girls v-ball banner

The first time the Bonita Vista and Eastlake girls volleyball teams paired up, the outcome went to five games. The teams’ Mesa League rematch on Nov. 4 was no less dramatic, with the visiting Barons pulling off a magical five-game thriller 22-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-22, 16-14 to share this year’s league title.

Eastlake won the teams’ initial encounter on Sept. 28 by scores of 18-25, 25-15, 25-13, 22-25, 15-13.

The Barons and Titans both finished 9-1 in league play.

Jenelle Hudson keyed BV in the rematch with 33 kills and 21 digs while teammate Megan Wright had 10 kills and 12 digs. Kelsey Ferko had 14 kills for the Barons while Cari Hudson had 55 assists, Taimane Napoleon had 14 digs and Rachel Lopez had 13 digs.

Eastlake, which feted its seniors prior to the game against Bonita Vista, finished regular season play with an impressive 24-6 record. The Barons were 13-10.

Otay Ranch (19-12) and Hilltop (13-13) tied for third in the league standings with 5-5 league records.

Jenelle Hudson and Wright each had 22 kills in the first meeting against the Titans, who received 19 kills from Malia Valdivieso, 22 assists from Chelsea Speaks and 19 digs from Cindy Fifield. Napoleon had 52 assists for the Barons.
