Barons reverse Titans to remain on top of girls volleyball loop

The Bonita Vista Barons improved to 2-0 in Mesa League play after wresting a 3-2 decision from visiting Eastlake on Tuesday. The Barons won 25-27, 23-25, 25-21, 25-16, 18-16 in dramatic come-from-behind fashion.

Allie Loitz led the hosts with 28 kills while teammate Taimane Napoleon registered 45 assists. Loitz and Hannah Flippen each had 15 digs while Megan Riley contributed 12 digs.

Bonita vista improved to 10-6 overall.

The Barons finished second at last year's San Diego Section Division II finals but graduated several key players off that team, leaving the 2012 edition to write its own history.

So far, so good.

Bonita Vista opened league play on Sept. 27 with a 3-0 sweep at Olympian. In that match-up, Kelsey Ferko led the Barons with 14 kills while Napoleon had 37 assists and Riley had 19 digs.

Bonita Vista next plays at small school power Francis Parker on Friday, Oct. 5, before resuming Mesa League play Tuesday, Oct. 9, against visiting Mater Dei Catholic.

The Barons finished 3-3 at the recent La Jolla Beach Cities tournament, defeating Granite Hills, Moorpark and La Jolla and dropping match-ups against Del Norte, Dana Hills and Westview.

Bonita Vista defeated Westview in last year's division semifinals.

Loitz leads the Barons on the season with 221 kills, followed by Ferko with 112. Loitz also has a team-leading 28 aces while Riley leads the team with 225 digs and Napoleon tops the team with 403 assists.

West Hills currently has the best winning percentage among the section's Division II teams at .765 with a 13-4 record.

The Barons dropped a 3-2 decision to the Wolf Pack on Sept. 18.
