The Bonita Vista Barons — and head coach Greg Raby — are suddenly on an unbeaten streak after last Friday’s 41-30 non-league victory at San Marcos. In the last two weeks, the Barons have one tie and a victory. They take an overall 1-2-1 record into Friday’s non-league game at Scripps Ranch (1-3).
“What an exciting game!” Raby said in regard to last Friday’s victory over the Knights (1-3). “We dominated the first three quarters with a powerful running game and some big pass plays.”
Bonita Vista ran the ball 55 times for 270 yards and completed seven of 10 passing attempts for 159 yards.
John Matranga rushed 22 times for 175 yards and scored two touchdowns. He has now scored nine touchdowns in four games.
Tight end Saul Liang scored on a 35-yard touchdown pass from Johnathan Manjarrez. Manjarrez also hit Atal Khaliq on a 40-yard TD strike and fired a 35-yard scoring pass to Chris Moore.
Tailback Manuel Vasquez also scored one rushing touchdown. The Barons did not punt for the first time until the end of the third quarter.
“We are beginning to find our identity as an offense and behind Johnathan Manjarrez we are rapidly improving in the passing game,” Raby said.
Devon Roncoroni, the only female field goal kicker in the Mesa League, kicked five point-after touchdown conversions.
