It is pretty much barbecue weather year-round in Southern California, but there’s nothing better than a summer backyard barbecue.
When the weather warms, it’s time to get out of the house, fire up the grill and start cooking all those tasty barbecue recipes you’ve had a hankering to try.
Marie Callender’s makes it easy with the restaurant chain’s backyard barbecue menu now being served through the end of summer.
The restaurant’s barbecue recipes are bold and, best of all, come with a free slice of pie.
The BBQ turkey sliders (thinly shaved turkey breast topped with BBQ sauce and cole slaw served on mini ciabatta rolls) start off the selections. Other items include the tri-tip salad (for something lighter during warm weather) and the BBQ pulled pork sandwich (served with cole slaw heaped over the slow-cooked meat on a toasted bun).
Prices start at $9.99.
Another option is to try the build-your-own BBQ platter, which is priced at $15.99. Diners may choose two barbecue meat items and two sides.
The meat selections include slow-roasted and hard-carved tri-tip, grilled BBQ shrimp skewer, St. Louis BBQ ribs, grilled BBQ chicken breast and crispy chicken tenders.
We ordered “the picture” — the mouth-watering advertising glamour shot of the hard-carved tri-tip, shrimp skewer, loaded mashed potatoes and BBQ baked beans. The picture pretty much lived up to expectations.
The beans and potatoes both made for solid side dishes and complemented the barbecued meat very well.
Marie Callender’s is located in Chula Vista at 330 F St. Call 420-0751.
