Diego Rodriguez rushed for 228 yards on 15 carries and scored four touchdowns to lead the visiting Montgomery Aztecs to a resounding 45-20 non-league victory over the El Cajon Valley Braves in the season opener for both teams last Friday. Rodriguez scored on runs of 60, 22, 48 and 25 yards as the Aztecs rolled up an impressive 383 yards in rushing offense.

Manny Quiambao scored on a four-yard run and 21-yard scoring pass from reserve quarterback Steve Schafer, who completed three of nine passing attempts for 30 yards and rushed eight times for 48 yards.

Miguel Trujillo rounded out the Montgomery scoring on a one-yard run while Quiambao also scored on a two-point try.

Defensively, Robert Smith led the Aztecs with three interceptions while Quiambao had one pick. Daniel Padilla had one sack and one fumble recovery while Joel Castro caused two fumbles.

El Cajon Valley scored two late touchdowns to make the score somewhat more cosmetically appealing. Dontae Bailey scored on a 97-yard kickoff return while quarterback Shabo Gibo passed for 159 yards and two scores — both to Simon Daly.

Montgomery coach Julio Alcala was obviously pleased by the victory. "We fixed a lot of mistakes we made in the Kick Off Classic," he said. "I thought we did well considering we really didn’t have a passing game. Steven Schafer came in and filled in and did what we asked him to do. Our rushing yardage proved that our offensive line unit did a good job blocking. Our receivers also blocked down field and that also helped. Defensively, we played well. We forced a lot of turnovers. I was very pleased with our defensive effort."

The Aztecs have a bye week before hosting Kearny on Sept. 17.
