High school soccer games are 80 minutes for a reason, and the Montgomery Aztecs discovered that in last Friday’s (Jan. 13) South Bay League game at Chula Vista by netting the tying goal in the 79th minute.
Brandi Sanchez scored off a cross from teammate Sofia Mendez to cap a late rush downfield by the Aztecs (1-2-1 in league play, 1-8-1 overall) in capturing the 1-1 draw. “This means a lot to the girls — they never gave up,” MOHS coach Jesse Garcia said. “We knew we were going to get some chances in the second half and we finally got one.”
Kimberly Mederos scored in the first half for Chula Vista (2-1-1, 3-9-2).
The Spartans controlled much of the play in the second half in an attempt to add to their lead but the game turned in the final minute after Montgomery received a re-start deep in the CVHS defensive end.
