Chula Vista police detectives arrested Miguel Angel Malacara Wednesday, for a series of groping incidents that occurred in western Chula Vista.
Chula Vista Police Chief David Bejarano said Malacara, 25, is responsible for at least 14 sexual batteries against females that occurred between Sept. 19, 2010 and Jan. 27.
Malacara would sneak up behind his victims, many of who were distracted and grabbed their chest, crotch and buttocks.
Malacara was identified after a patrol officer obtained DNA evidence from a victim who was bitten on the buttocks during one of the attacks.
“Hopefully his arrest eliminates fear for females, especially for those who live in the area where the incidents occurred,” Bejarano said.
Before being identified as a suspect, he was involved in a domestic violence incident Jan.
28 against his girlfriend, who sustained moderate injuries. Last Friday, Malacara was involved in another domestic violence incident.
Earlier this week a warrant for felony domestic violence was issued for Malacara’s arrest. He was found at his girlfriend’s house and taken into custody.
Bejarano said police are still in the investigation process. “We’re talking to all of the victims who will view Malacara in a line up,” he said.
Bejarano said there are two other groping incidents believed to be committed by another suspect. “There could be a copy cat,” he said.
A community forum was held last week at Chula Vista High School, where police informed the community about the incidents and provided tips on how not to become a victim.
Malacara is being held without bail for felony domestic violence and violation for a 2009 conviction for sales and narcotics, according to Bejarano. Police are hopeful that additional charges will be filed against him as early as next week while the investigation continues.
Malacara’s arraignment is today at 1:30 p.m. at the South Bay courthouse.
