A man suspected of killing Michael Thompson, 52, of Chula Vista, pleaded guilty Oct. 2 to voluntary manslaughter and he will be sentenced to 17 years in prison.
Sentencing for Juan Rodrigio Cabrera, 24, was set for Oct. 29 by Chula Vista Superior Court Theodore Weathers, who dismissed a murder charge after Cabrera pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
Cabrera and Thompson knew each other and there was “an ongoing dispute between the two,” said Deputy District Attorney Matt Williams. The pair had argued about property and outstanding debts.
Thompson was stabbed multiple times outside his home on Shy Lane on May 29, 2012. He was hospitalized and died some days later after being in a coma.
Cabrera has agreed to accept the 17-year term, said Williams. He was on probation at the time for auto theft. He remains in the George Bailey Detention Facility without bail since his arrest on June 1, 2012, by Chula Vista Police.
